The governor has 10 days to formally respond to the initiative. The answers will eventually be reflected in a petition that will begin circulating to gather signatures to put the issue on the ballot.
To be on the November ballot, supporters need to collect valid signatures by May, equivalent to 12% of Newsom's vote in the previous election (just under 1.4 million). If the signature campaign continues beyond May, the election could be delayed even further.
