2024 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships
Gretchen Walsh (Virginia) and Chris Guiliano (Notre Dame) was named the 2024 ACC Championship Swimmer of the Year on Saturday night. Both athletes earned his three wins in individual events throughout the week, setting record-setting times in the process.
Walsh won the 50 free (20.57), 100 fly (48.25) and 100 free (45.16) titles, breaking NCAA and American records in all three races. She broke the 50-second free record twice on the same day, scoring a 20.77 during prelims, but she lowered it to a 20.57 to win the ACC title. In addition to those record-setting swims, she led Virginia's victorious 400-meter medley relay with a backstroke split of 48.10 and broke her own NCAA and U.S. records ( 48.25 points).
Walsh also helped the Cavaliers win the relay championship by winning the 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, and 400 medley relay. His 200 free relay (1:23.63) broke the NCAA record, making it the fastest time ever, and he achieved the first-ever sub-20 relay split (19.95) in the second leg. The 800-meter free relay was also historic, especially threatening Stanford's legendary 2017 NCAA record that included Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel. Walsh led the relay with a time of 1:40.23, the third-fastest 200-meter freestyle athlete in history, and then touched the relay with the second-fastest time in history.
Guiliano won the three fastest freestyle events on record, earning his first victory in the 50 free (18.57). He won the 200 free in the second half of the meet, tying Notre Dame's fourth-place 800 free relay lead-off time of 1:31.16 on opening day.
