EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — If you're driving down the Lloyd Expressway, you might notice some changes happening at the University of Evansville. That's because UE has begun a $1.2 million field renovation project that will change the team's internal and soccer practice fields from grass to grass.
Grass fields, like UE's intramurals, are frequently torn due to use by the men's and women's soccer teams and Evansville's rainy spring weather. In the coming months, this facility will be weatherproofed for the entire university community.
Chris Fau, UE's head women's soccer coach, said he expects his staff to be able to start work as early as next month.
Coach Pfau and UE Men's Soccer Director Rob Tarver also say there are many benefits for the student body.
“If there's bad weather or snow, you don't have to scramble,” Coach Tarver said. “We know we can use this lawn. I think it's great for us and I think it's great for the other students who can use it within the walls.”
As you visit campus or drive around Lloyd, you may notice that the men's and women's teams are doing some drills that were difficult beforehand, such as corner kicks.
Coaches agree this initiative impacts everyone on campus.
“I think it’s going to be huge that it’s not just a component athletics thing, it’s a university thing that everyone has access to,” Coach Pfau said. “I think that’s really big.”
Eyewitness News reports crews are on track to complete the project by July.
