Vinod Kambli is the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket.
Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game and the oldest form. This format requires a lot of effort from cricketers to perform at the highest level. That is why playing Test cricket is always important in a cricketer's career. History has seen many great debuts over the years, but not many have been able to continue that impressive run for long periods of time.
There are players in the history of Indian cricket who have scored centuries on debut and in series, but taking that momentum forward is another big challenge. Here we are talking about the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket.
Here are the top five Indian batsmen who were the fastest to score 1000 runs in Test cricket.
5. Sanjay Manjrekar โ 23 innings:
Former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar's career as a Test cricketer was not long, but he certainly got off to a pretty good start. He scored just 5 and 10 in his debut Test against West Indies, but picked up the pace after that. Manjrekar achieved 1000 runs in 23 innings in Test cricket. Overall, he played 37 Tests and scored 2043 runs at 37.14 with four centuries and nine half-centuries.
4. Sunil Gavaskar โ 21 innings:
Sunil Gavaskar needs no introduction in this game. In fact, he inspired many young Indians to take up the sport. He made his debut in 1971 against the fiery West Indies pacers without a helmet and contributed to the team's victory with his 65 runs and his 67 runs in the match. He improved and reached 1000 RBIs in 21 innings. He became the first batsman in history to reach 10,000 RBIs in this format of the game. He retired with 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12 (including 34 hand runs and 45 fifty runs).
3. Mayank Agarwal โ 19 innings:
Mayank Agarwal marked his debut in Test cricket by making his debut at the iconic MCG against Australia's pace attack and scoring 76 and 42 in the match. Mayank Agarwal completed the double hundred twice in his first 10 Tests. Agarwal took just 19 innings to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket. He was instrumental in India's Test series wins in Australia in 2018 and 2021.
2. Cheteshwar Pujara โ 18 innings:
After Rahul Dravid's retirement, India needed a plucky No. 3 who could absorb pressure and score big runs, and they found Cheteshwar Pujara. He is in and out of the team now, but had a great Test career representing India. Pujara achieved 1000 runs in just 18 innings in Test cricket. So far, he has scored 7195 runs in 103 Tests with 19 centuries and 35 half-centuries.
1. Vinod Kambli โ 14 innings:
Vinod Kambli is considered one of the bad boys of Indian cricket, but one thing is for sure: he possessed incredible batting skills that made him popular early in his career. This left-handed bowler came from the same background as Sachin Tendulkar. He performed well from the beginning, becoming the fastest Indian batsman and the third fastest to complete 1000 Test runs in just 14 innings. Kambli played 17 Tests and scored 1084 runs at 54.20 in 21 innings with four centuries.
