MANKATO โ Mike Sullivan, radio announcer for the Minnesota State University men's hockey team, has announced his retirement after 24 seasons.
He made the announcement Monday morning on KTOE AM 1420. His last day at Radio Mankato will be June 30.
“Mike Sullivan's name is synonymous with Maverick hockey,” Minnesota State University Athletic Director Kevin Buisman said in a press release. “His passion, dedication, commitment and professionalism were evident and his broadcasts set the standard for others to aspire to. His storytelling brought the game to life for his avid listeners and his voice has been part of some of the most iconic moments in Maverick hockey history.”
Sullivan has called 914 Michigan State games since taking on the role in the 2000-01 season, including a record 504 consecutive games prior to the 2013-14 season, and also calls Michigan State football games each year prior to the start of the men's hockey season.
During Sullivan's tenure, the Mavericks became a national powerhouse, appearing in the NCAA Tournament nine times and the Frozen Four twice. The Mavericks reached the national championship game in 2022.
“Sully is a true professional in his profession,” said Luke Strand, coach of the Minnesota State University men's hockey team, “and his passion for Maverick hockey and the Mankato community is second to none, and we will miss his daily contributions.”
