The first round of the NCHSAA Women's Basketball Playoffs began Tuesday night, with teams from across the state playing in win-or-home situations to extend the season.
Of the 16 girls games played in the 3A East bracket on Tuesday, there was one game that was special to Fayetteville fans, especially 70-First fans.
The 22nd-seeded Falcons defeated No. 11 West Brunswick 62-42 on their home floor, the only upset of the opening round of the playoffs.
“We had good chemistry,” coach Brandi Ingram said after the win. “Thanks to that, I was able to concentrate on the game from beginning to end.”

The Falcons scored 41 points in the second half, including a 22-point streak in the fourth quarter from freshman Kariana Williams, who finished with 16 points.
Fellow freshman Jewel Gulley led the way with 11 points.
Ingram talked about what contributed to the late victory. “Forcing turnovers and converting them on offense while limiting turnovers and fouls was very important for us,” she said.
The 22nd-ranked No. 71 (14-13) will travel to No. 6 Southern Durham (23-5) on Friday, March 1 for a second-round match against the Northern Lakes Conference champions.
“We have to keep playing the game and everyone has to fit their pieces into the puzzle,” Ingram said.
