New Delhi: The Minnesota Vikings have decided to part ways with running back Alexander Mattison, according to reports circulating on Thursday. The move comes after Mattison signed a two-year contract worth $7 million with the team last spring. Despite the financial commitment, the Vikings opted to release Mattison, who was scheduled to carry a hefty $4.6 million cap hit in the 2024 season.
Mattison's journey with the Vikings began in 2019 when he was drafted by the team in the third round. For four seasons, he served as a reliable backup and occasional fill-in for star running back Dalvin Cook. However, Mattison's role changed dramatically in 2023 when Cook was fired, pushing Mattison into the starting role.
During his time as a starter, Mattison set a career high in rushing attempts, carrying the ball 180 times and gaining rushing yards, totaling 700 yards on the ground. Despite these accomplishments, he fell significantly short of his rushing touchdown record and ultimately lost the starting spot to Ty Chandler in December. Mattison also contributed in the passing game, recording 30 receptions for 192 yards and three touchdowns during the 2023 season.
Mattison, 25, rushed for 2,370 yards, 584 carries and 11 touchdowns during his five-season, 75-game tenure with the Vikings. He also showed his versatility as a pass catcher, with 100 receptions, 718 yards, and six touchdowns. Despite his contributions, the Vikings made the difficult decision to part ways with Mattison as they look to reshape their roster going forward.
