MASSapequa Park, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators returned Monday to the home of a New York architect charged in the case. series of murders known as Murder at Gilgo Beach.
State and county law enforcement descended on Rex Heuerman's dilapidated single-family home in Massapequa Park, Long Island, just before 7 a.m.
They used cars to set up fences to block off the block and pitched white tents in front of the red houses.
Forensic and crime lab units spent most of the day at the scene, while officers removed boxes and bags of evidence from the home. Officials from the Suffolk County Coroner's Office also visited.
Spokespeople for the New York State Police and Suffolk County Police Department deferred questions to the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, who declined to comment.
“As District Attorney Tierney has previously stated, the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force continues to operate,” her spokeswoman Tania Lopez said in an emailed statement. “We do not comment on ongoing stages of investigation.”
Lawyers for Heuerman and his family did not respond to calls or emails seeking comment Monday, but told local news outlets that Heuerman's wife and two adult children were not home at the time. . Heuerman has been in custody since his arrest last July and has maintained his innocence.
About two weeks after his arrest, police searched his home in a suburban town about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Manhattan.
Monday's search also comes about a month after authorities spent more than a week Searching in the wooded area of Manorville.. The bodies of two women were found years ago in an area about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Heuerman's home, but Heuerman has not been charged in their slayings.
Heuerman, 60, is scheduled to appear in Suffolk County Criminal Court in Riverhead on June 18 for a status hearing. His trial date has not been set.
