Wednesday's special general meeting of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) Executive to pass a motion of no confidence in Treasurer Kiswa Chaitu is still on.
This was confirmed by TTCB Chairman Azim Basaras on Tuesday.
The meeting was held to lodge a motion of no confidence against Chaitou after he discovered and brought to the board's attention the alleged misappropriation of TTCB funds worth an estimated $500,000 in December 2023. ing.
Previous reports said the misappropriation of funds took place over a period of about five years and led to employees leaving the company. It also became clear that it was common to have a blank check in case a situation arose where you needed money right away. This has since stopped.
Mr Chaithu, an experienced forensic accountant, said he wanted to protect his name and reported the matter to the fraud squad.
However, his actions caused a stir among executives, and at the January 10th executive meeting, nine of the 11 committee members voted in favor, one opposed, and one abstained. A motion of no confidence was passed.
However, a two-thirds majority vote of all 49 board members is required to remove Chaitoo.
“That's a board member-only meeting,” Basaras said during Wednesday's meeting. The meeting is still going on. ”
Also on Tuesday, a newspaper reported that the TTCB had been issued a pre-action protocol letter by three regions – Central, North and South-West – asking the executive to reconsider and/or cancel the meeting until an “independent investigation” is completed. It was reported that they would ask for it.
He also said he would seek “injunctive relief” if the meeting were to take place.
“We are addressing it as we speak,” Basaras said in the letter.
Basaras, who is also vice-president of Cricket West Indies, said of the ongoing investigation by the fraud squad: “It is neither in our best interests nor premature to make any statement at this time.”
