WOOD RIVER JUNCTION – When asked about Cody Poplaski, Chariho boys soccer coach Les Ahern had high praise.
“Cody is by far one of the most talented people when it comes to soccer at Chariho,” Ahern said recently in an email. “His work ethic is exemplary.”
Populski, a junior captain and striker, led the Chargers in scoring for the second straight year this fall, scoring 23 times and earning second-team all-state selection and first-team all-division selection. choose.
Populski recorded five hat tricks on the season, his first in a 5-3 win over Coventry, and also in back-to-back wins over Narragansett and Hope. He also scored four goals in the 7-1 win over Tiverton.
“Cody has high expectations for next season,” Ahern said. “Any school would be lucky to have him on their roster.”
Joining Poplaski as a first-team all-division selection is senior Brandon Knowles.
Knowles, a senior captain, had seven goals and 17 assists. Four of those assists came in Chariho's 7-2 win over Cranston East (part of a back-to-back series), which clinched the Chargers a spot in the Division 2 tournament.
Chariho, which won back-to-back Division II state titles in 2021 and 2022, finished 6-9-1 overall and 6-8-1 in D-II play. The Chargers, the No. 8 seed in the D-II playoffs, hosted No. 9 seed Tiverton in a qualifying round game, dropping a 4-3 decision that resulted in a penalty shootout.
Senior midfielder Christian Resinger (two goals) was selected to the Division II second team and earned all-academic honors, while junior Jacob Bennett (two goals, two assists) was selected to the third team.
