Domestic women's red-ball cricket was last hosted by BCCI in 2018.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a major step forward for women's cricket with the resumption of domestic red-ball tournaments. The Senior Women's Interzone Multi-Day Trophy will be held in Pune from March 28, marking a welcome return to the red-ball format after a gap of six years. Domestic women's red-ball cricket was last held in 2018.
This big move comes after the Indian women's team returned to Test cricket. Recently, the Indian Test team played two matches in December 2023. One match was against Australia and the other was against England in home conditions. India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, won both Test matches against Australia and England.
The red-ball tournament will be organized by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) and six teams will participate in the much-awaited women's red-ball game. Teams from East, West, North, South, Central and Northeast will compete for the prestigious title. All six teams will play in a five-game series, each played over three days.
The competition begins on March 28th with quarterfinals between East Zone and Northeast Zone, West Zone and Central Zone, with the semifinals scheduled for April 3rd.
“This is a welcome step taken by the BCCI. The national team has resumed playing Test cricket and we need the next generation of cricketers to play red-ball cricket at the domestic level.” Former India pacer Amita Sharma told PTI.
The Women's Red Ball tournament will begin immediately after the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024, which concludes on March 17th.
“I would like to see Red Ball played not only at the regional level but also at the state level. In the old days, we had both events.” she added.
