Indiana Hoosiers All-American Mackenzie Holmes left Sunday's 71-54 win over the Maryland Terps with a left knee injury and did not return.
Holmes appeared to injure her knee in the third quarter when a Maryland defender slid in front of her while going for a layup and, realizing the injury, hopped on one leg.
The 6-foot-3 center was able to get up off the floor under his own power and returned to the locker room for evaluation before returning and sitting on the Hoosiers' bench at the end of the game.
The fifth-year senior, Indiana's leading scorer (20.7 PPG) and rebounder (7.1 RPG), has missed or been limited in minutes throughout his career with the same knee injury, including the 2023 postseason. I've been doing a lot of things.
To make matters worse for Indiana, sophomore Lily Meister also left the game in the second half with an ankle injury.
Indiana coach Terry Moren said after the game that both players will be evaluated with the hopes of being available for the third-seeded Hoosiers in the Big Ten Tournament, which opens on Friday.
“I try like crazy to not let my mind go where it shouldn't go,” Moren said, according to the Indy Star. “In that moment, your job as a coach is to make sure you're focused on the kids on the floor. And that's what I tried to do. Again, to me I don’t know.” [what to take] Right now, emotionally, I don't know. I'm going to be optimistic until they say otherwise. ”
Moren added of Holmes: “She certainly had some bad luck, especially in late February. We're going to be optimistic that things will turn out the way we hoped. Mac is very, very resilient and as we know , tough kid.”
