Camas — A Utah high school basketball player has achieved a major career milestone: 1,000 rebounds in one season. And she doesn't stop there.
Emma Broadbent started her junior season at South Summit High School with 590 rebounds, more than half of her goal of 1,000 rebounds.
She never imagined breaking the record, but says she has worked hard to perfect her rebounding technique.
“I think rebounding is kind of an art. You have to know when to jump and when to go for the ball,” Broadbent said.
But she admits there's also luck involved.
“Because when the ball hits the rim, it just kind of comes closer,” she said.
The ball was put in the hands of South Summit High Stars a lot!
Broadbent set a career 1,000 rebounds record this month, ranking first in Utah and 11th in the nation.
“I never thought I'd be able to do it this year. I mean, 1,000 rebounds is unheard of,” she said.
A few weeks later, she broke the state record for most rebounds in a season with 436. Her previous record was 432.
“I was very excited,” Broadbent said. “She didn't realize she wasn't around until she saw her mother. Her mother said she needed another one.”
Broadbent, who averaged 18 rebounds per game, credits his mother, who played college baseball, for getting him into the right position. Broadbent also models his game after another player, Lauren Gustin.
“I love watching BYU's Lauren Gustin play. I mean, the double-double queen, she's always so aggressive and strong on the ball. I have so much respect for her,” Broadbent said. said.
Although Ms. Broadbent's basketball season is over, the 4.0 grade student is busy playing softball and volleyball.
A team player who always takes on challenges.
“I love the people I play with,” Broadbent said. “Nowhere else do you get that incredible amount of adrenaline when you do something good than when you’re playing basketball.”
Since Broadbent is still a junior, he has one more year to break even more records and is looking forward to playing college ball.
