The annual season-ending Arlington Cup ice hockey showdown between Washington and the Liberty Generals and Yorktown Patriots high school club teams is scheduled for Friday night, March 8, at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex.Face-off will be from approximately 7:45 to 8 p.m.
The County Showdown is held every winter following the regular season and playoffs for each team, with teams competing in different leagues.
Washington Liberty won last year's contest 3-1. Yorktown has won the previous two meetings.
The Generals had a record of 9 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw, while Yorktown had a record of 7 wins and 4 losses.
The Washington Liberty recently finished the Capital Scholastic Hockey League playoffs with a 2-1 record, losing to Alexandria City 4-3 in the championship match. Oliver Black, Sam Lucas and Lucas Everett scored for WL at Prince William County Arena. This loss ended the Generals' nine-game winning streak, which started with an 0-2-1 record.
Washington Liberty defeated Forest Park 5-2 in the semifinals and West Springfield 4-1 in the first round.
Black scored twice against Forest Park with goals from William Clarke, Brian Murphy and Paul Burmeister. Against West Springfield, Everett scored twice, with Lucas and Alexander VanHaren scoring the others.
Black was named to the All-League second team for his play this winter. He is the team's leading scorer with 16 goals and 7 assists. Everett, Burmeister, Simon Jackson, Kai Behrens and Will Jamison received honorable mentions.
Yorktown went 0-1 in the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League playoffs, losing to Oakton 5-2 after a first-round bye. The game was tied at two points, with Oakton scoring the final three goals.
Roger Allenbaugh and Henry Dwyer scored Yorktown's goals. Peyton Tien and Logan McGraw had assists. Allenbaugh is Yorktown's leading scorer with 11 goals and seven assists.
With the loss, Yorktown defeated Broad Run 4-3 and John Champ/Lightridge 8-3, ending its winning streak at two.
Yorktown advanced to the playoffs after finishing first in the Patrick Division standings.
