Delhi Capitals languished at the bottom of the five-team Women's Premier League (WPL) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, making life even more miserable for the winless Gujarat Giants. I made it. Meg Lanning's side finished at the top of the points table with a 25-run victory, but GG lost four games in a row and ended up with no points.
Lanning, who started as DC's batsman, hit a 41-ball 55 (6×4, 1×6) to improve the defending runner-up team's record to 163/8. Gujarat pacer Meghna Singh took three of her first four wickets (4/37) but her team still has scope to chase down a challenging target. It had been. GG bowled better compared to previous matches, but was left on the back foot due to dropped catches, chasing targets and was restricted to 138/8.
Australia's Ashley Gardener (40-31b, 5×4, 1×6) got GG's hopes up in the chase, but left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen was tripped by Tanya Bhatia, ending her stay on the wicket.
The 31-year-old Jonassen (3/22) made the most of the match, picking up three important wickets as the left-arm spinner proved his mettle in T20s. The GG batting line was unable to take advantage of any chances. Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav also cobwebbed around the GG batsman, taking 3/20.
Captain Beth Mooney, who opted to bowl, would have wanted her bowlers to limit the DC. Meghna was impressed and eliminated Shafali Verma (13), Alice Capsey (27) and Lanning. The DC skipper, who was leading from the front, could have been out for 30 off the bowling of spinner Manat Kashyap, but was dropped by Kathryn Blyth. Capsey scored a 17-ball 27 and Annabelle Sutherland chipped in with a 12-ball 20 to give momentum to the DC innings.
In the end, GG moved up the rankings by dropping the catch.
GG's batting also let them down. Beth Mooney (14) had her leg trapped by Jonassen and Shikha Pandey bowled opposing opener Laura Wolvaardt for no score. Jonassen also had Phoebe Litchfield (15), but Veda Krishnamurthy (12) also missed the starting lineup. Debutant Tarannum Pathan, 9, was trapped in front of Arundhati Reddy. Gardner showed some flashes, but didn't get much support from his opponents.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will take on UP Warriors on Monday before the WPL 2 moves to Delhi.
