In tragic news, Worcestershire have announced the death of young left-arm spinner Josh Baker, aged 20. Josh, who made his debut for Worcestershire in 2021, has made a total of 47 appearances across various formats for the county club, with 70 winning wickets among them.
Josh also scored two first-class half-centuries and showed that he has the makings of a quality all-rounder.
Worcestershire chief executive Ashley Giles said: “We are all devastated by the news of Josh's death. Josh was more than just a team-mate, he was an integral part of our cricket family. We all wish him well. He will be greatly missed. With all our love and affection.” Prayers go out to Josh's family and friends. ”
Worcestershire has paid tribute to Josh, remembering his “vibrant spirit” and “contagious enthusiasm”.
“More than his skill as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and contagious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met. His warmth, kindness and professionalism were outstanding and he was a true achievement for his family and for a much-loved member of our team,” the club said in a statement.
“The club is dedicated to supporting Josh's family, friends and colleagues at this extremely difficult time. We stand united in our grief and commemorate him in a manner befitting the great man he was.” We will do our best to honor the.
“Plans for paying tribute to Josh have been made in consultation with his family and will remain private at this time. The Club joins Josh's family in mourning this immense loss and asks that their privacy be respected. No further comment will be provided during this sensitive period.”
Josh also represented England at Under-19 level.
Rob Lynch, chief executive of the Professional Cricketers' Association, also paid tribute to Josh.
“Everyone at PCA is saddened to hear of Josh's death and sends our deepest condolences to all his family, friends and team-mates. Josh had lived his entire career and life as a cricketer and we are saddened to hear of Josh's death. It is impossible to comprehend. The PCA and the Professional Cricketers Trust are working to support Josh's family, team-mates and all affected PCA members. Rest in peace, Josh.” said Lynch.
