The Indiana High School Athletic Association Board of Directors this week approved full recognition of boys' volleyball and girls' wrestling starting in the 2024-25 school year.
These two sports were added as “emerging sports” in 2022 by the IHSAA.
With full approval, the IHSAA will establish state tournaments for both sports, with details for those events expected to be announced in the coming months.
As during the emerging sports process, women's wrestling will become a winter sport and men's volleyball will become a spring sport.
The IHSAA said both sports have seen significant growth across the state over the past two years. Women's wrestling has more than 1,400 student-athletes representing 177 schools, and the men's volleyball team has grown to more than 100.
The last sports fully sanctioned by the association were unified flag football in 2018 and unified track and field in 2013.
The IHSAA also noted that a proposal to add women's lacrosse to the emerging sports process has been tabled to the June board meeting.
