It was a game that allowed the players to try out different positions.
Bailey Vaughn took advantage of his transition from defensive end to score his first varsity goal as Fort Madison defeated Keokuk 10-0 in the postseason Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinals at Baxter Sports Complex on Friday. I decided.
Keokuk finished the year with a 1-13 record and will play on a new turf field next season.
The Bloodhounds improved to 11-3 and advance to face arch-rival Burlington (13-2) on Tuesday at Bracewell Stadium. Two of FMHS's two losses were to BHS, with one loss to Burlington going to penalties after two overtimes.
“I don't think there's any more motivation (needed) to play in Burlington again,” FMHS coach Carrie Berken said. “Those are the people we always circle on our calendars. I'm sure they do the same.
“It's going to be a tough game, a close one. I'm looking forward to going to Bracewell.”
Bourne was looking forward to the chance to attack.
“It was amazing,” Vaughn said of the goal. “The adrenaline was really pumping and I was so happy to be able to help the team. It really meant a lot. It was exciting.”
There aren't many scoring opportunities for a defender, so Vaughn had to take advantage of that. This was her time.
“When my coach told me to come up, I thought this was my chance,” Vaughn said.
When the chance came, “I was a little hesitant at first because I didn't want to hit my teammate, but then she moved out of the way so I kicked her and hoped for the best.”
Teagan Snart and Natalie Randolph had hat tricks for Fort Madison, but Vaughn took a shot from 20 yards to go and the hands of Keokuk keeper Lerina Wong tried to stop the ball from going into the goal. The score was only 3-0. .
The score was 4-0 15 minutes into the game, but no one scored for the next 20 minutes.
Snart scored his third goal with less than five minutes left before intermission. She scored FMHS' first goal after just over a minute. She used deft footwork to dribble past the defense and into the net.
Hadley Wolf won the ball inside the box and scored a goal a minute later. Snart made it 3-0 with 27 minutes left.
Half of the Bloodhounds' goals came from assists with Wolf bringing in two helpers. Adalyn Kruse, Halle Menke and Molly Schulte each had an assist.
“I didn't think we played poorly in the first half, we just missed a lot of chances that we could have taken,” Berken said.
At halftime she challenged her team: “Let's see if we can step it up a bit.”
The Bloodhounds did just that 1:11 into the second half, scoring on a corner kick they had been working on in practice.
Randolph got his first goal off Menke on a set piece with 38:49 remaining. Wolfe scored 15 minutes later and assisted Randolph's second goal with 15:45 left.
The game ended with a mercy rule, and with 14:15 clocking on the scoreboard, Carla Lake scored her 10th goal with a free kick from the top of the circle.
