Boston –The Boston University women's ice hockey team's season ended Wednesday night when the seventh-seeded Terriers lost to 10th-seeded Holy Cross, 4-2, in the opening game of the Hockey East tournament at Walter Brown Arena.
The teams went into the first interval tied at 2-2 after a back-and-forth first period, but the visitors broke the deadlock in the second, scoring another late goal despite the Terriers holding on to a one-point lead.
Senior Defender Tamara Giaquinto and Julia Shaughnessy The goals helped the Terriers to a record of 14 wins, 18 losses and 3 draws.
How it happened
- Lane Lewis redirected a Carmen Elliott shot just 29 seconds into the game to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.
- Giaquinto tied it on the power play at 7:02, thanks to an assist from the Welke sisters. Luisa handed the puck to Lili, who slid it across the zone to Giaquinto at the bottom of the left circle, who beat Madison Beck with a one-timer shot.
- Shaughnessy's first goal of the season gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead with 1:55 left in the opening period. After some great shifts by Vaught and Welks, Giaquinto kept the play down the goal line and passed it back to Fitzgerald, who had just come on the ice. Fitzgerald made a pass to Shaughnessy, who had just come off the bench. Shaughnessy received the pass at the top of the zone and fired the puck past Beck.
- But the Crusaders battled back with under 30 seconds left in the first period to tie the game at 2-2, then scored the only goal of the third period to take a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
- Millie Silham added another point for Holy Cross with 3:53 left in the game.
- The terrier pulled Carrie Shanahan They brought on another attacker in the final minutes but were unable to beat Beck's goal.

- BU held a 39-16 advantage in shots and put 15 shots on goal in the final period.
- Beck made an impressive 37 saves for the Crusaders, who will face top-seeded UConn in Saturday's quarterfinals.
- The Terriers were successful 1 of 4 on the power play and prevented the Crusaders from scoring on two man-advantage opportunities.
- BU held a 32-13 advantage on the faceoff.
