Danny Sprinkle, who was hired as the basketball coach at the University of Washington, had a nearly full roster with a flurry of transfer portal signings, led by former Utah State University forward Great Osobole, but the NCAA Of the 13 students approved, only one remains on a scholarship.
One became available when 6-foot-8 junior forward Samuel Aliyibi entered the transfer portal in April, but it wasn't widely known. He remains on campus at the University of Wisconsin, training with his former teammates and waiting to see what happens.
Aliyibi, a product of the NBA Africa Academy and a native of Lagos, Nigeria, looked promising enough when he signed with departed coach Mike Hopkins' program, but suffered a serious ankle or foot injury and missed three seasons at Montlake. I couldn't maintain my health. And he gets hurt again.
He appeared in four games as a freshman in 2021-22, missed all games the following year, and appeared in just one game last season, the Huskies' Game 6 game against San Diego (a two-minute tie).
Aliyibi's departure leaves the Huskies with 6-foot-11 senior center Frank Kepnan, 6-foot-10 senior forward Wilhelm Breidenbach, and 6-foot-8 redshirt freshman forward Chris King. There were still players remaining.
Kepnan transferred to UW from Oregon State two years ago, but he may have up to two seasons of eligibility left after suffering two knee injuries late in the season. Breidenbach joined the Huskies from Nebraska last season. King, the son of former Sonics center Rich King, is the only remaining scout from Hopkins' days at Blue University.
