Class 4A Area II
Kilgore 2, Wilmer Hutchins 0
TYLER — After three straight one-goal wins in the postseason, Wilmer Hutchins entered halftime in a 0-0 stalemate with Kilgore.
Kilgore got two second-half goals from freshman Enrique Salazar, and Bulldogs goaltender Chris Martinez was able to save all three of the Eagles' attempts on goal in the second half, giving Kilgore a second-half goal in Class 4A Region II. We were able to achieve a -0 victory. The men's soccer semi-final was played at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Wilmer Hutchins put pressure on Kilgore multiple times during the first 13 minutes of the second half, to no avail. Salazar's first goal came with 24:21 left in the game, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
Kilgore looked to extend its lead in the final 13 minutes when Leo Izaguirre had a shot on goal that was saved by Wilmer-Hutchins goalie Fermin Pantoja. Diego Rojas pushed the ball into the net with a rebound, but the referee canceled the goal at 12:20 into the game. Exactly 33 seconds later, Salazar was in the right spot at the right time and slotted the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Pantoja took multiple 60-yard free kicks for the Eagles (19-6) in the second half, but none resulted in goals.
It was Esteban Quesada who took the free kick in the first half, forcing Martinez to make a number of saves. Kilgore had three shots on goal, including one with 1:59 left in the first half, and Pantoja was able to keep the game scoreless in the final minutes of the first half.
Kilgore (23-2-2) will play Palestine or Frisco Panther Creek in the regional final at 11 a.m. Saturday in Tyler.
