So who is the man who stole the heart of the world's best female golfer and is a professional athlete himself? Here's what we know.
Nelly Korda and Andreas Athanasiou cheer each other on at a match
Korda announced the pair's relationship in a 2019 Instagram post that has since been deleted, but the couple have been spotted together in public on numerous occasions, including at each other's matches and tournaments.
Athanasiou is often seen with her world-famous beau to celebrate victories, such as the Major LPGA Classic in 2021. Similarly, Korda represented her lover, the Blackhawks, by wearing the team's jersey at the 2022 CP Women's Open.
Andreas Athanasiou is a veteran NHL player.
Like Korda, he has won gold medals: one with Ontario's winning team at the 2011 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and another with Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
What is Andreas Athanasiou's background?
Athanasiou was born in Woodbridge, Ontario, and is a Canadian citizen, but is of Greek and Guyanese ethnicity, according to his NHL biography.
His father, Stan Athanasiou, is a commercial pilot for Air Canada, he is Greek and grew up in Athens, and his mother, Nadira, is reportedly of Indo-Guyanese descent, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Andreas Athanasiou is a vegan
After doing a lot of reading, Athanasiou chose to give up meat, fish and dairy for personal reasons, according to the Detroit Free Press. “I thought it would be a good idea to try it, and I liked it, so I stuck with it. It meant I had to eat a little bit more, but it was pretty easy to get through,” Athanasiou said.
He was allegedly subjected to racism during the match.
He missed several months of matches due to injury.
Athanasiou put his NHL career on an unexpected hiatus after suffering a serious right hip and groin injury in November 2023. The injury sidelined him for nearly four months and took a toll on his mental health, as he “experienced many sleepless nights and days of suffering in pain,” according to NBC Sports Chicago.
But this wasn't his first injury – he had a similar injury on the other foot while playing for the Los Angeles Kings – and made his return in March of this year.
