CB Cain Lee (Austin Perryman/Auburn Tigers)
This is the final week of Auburn football's 2024 spring practice, and that means two things.
First, the Tigers will return to Jordan-Hare Stadium in front of a live crowd on Saturday for their annual A-day game. Second, Tuesday was the last day media members could watch practice.
And boy, did we ever make the most of that last opportunity.
After the head coach's press conference before the spring game Hugh Freezemedia members were allowed to watch Tuesday afternoon's practice at the Football Performance Center for about two hours.
From quarterback battles and fresh two-deep observations on both sides of the ball to copious notes on what we saw and heard on Tuesday afternoon, there's a lot to take away from this observation log.
So let's get straight to the point. Here are his 3,000+ words about the big day at the end of Spring Practice Access. Let's start with the most important position on the field.
QB Peyton Thorne (Austin Perryman/Auburn Tigers)
nevertheless peyton thorne Auburn has a number of FBS starters and the other three scholarship quarterbacks have little experience, but Auburn enters 2024 with real competition at the position. .
Freeze said that's still the case late in spring practice.
“I believe that the competition between Hank (brown), Holden (Gellinor) And Peyton was really good,” Freese said. “Walker (white) He has incredible arm strength, but as a freshman, he's a bit of a swimmer in a lot of what defenses see. … I like the competition that I see there. ”
To be clear, Thorne is still in the early stages of this work. That was the case all spring, and he was the starting quarterback in nearly every drill during the media viewing period.
“Based on what we saw this spring, Payton still has the lead and pole position will come into fall camp this fall,” Freese said. “But I don't think the difference between him and Hank and Holden is that far off. Again, that doesn't mean Walker isn't doing well. He's just learning. But he's really , really talented.
“Going into fall camp, Peyton will be the No. 1 player.”
Hours after Freeze's press conference, it was easy to see why Thorne was considered to be in the QB1 driver's seat.
