Wednesday's high school sports roundup: Hornets lose to WD in football showdown

SALISBURY — The Salisbury girls soccer team lost 2-0 to West Davidson in a Central Carolina Conference game Wednesday at Ludwig Stadium.
“We played with a lot of heart, but West Davidson was a little bit better than us in most ways,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “Still, we competed on all three levels for 80 minutes. The first goal we conceded was a very soft one, but we still kept fighting.”
The Hornets (7-3-1, 5-2) got strong play from Stella Koontz, Laura Koontz and Stephanie Quintero.
“Stella has had a campaign worthy of Defensive Player of the Year, stopping a West Davidson offense that has been strong over the last 10 games multiple times,” Parrish said. “Laura maintained a high level in conference play. Stephanie played very well for a long time.”
West Davidson (14-0-1) is No. 2 in the 2A West RPI rankings. The Hornets are 14th.
Salisbury plays at Lexington Thursday at 6 p.m.

LEXINGTON — Salisbury won a Central Carolina Conference match Wednesday at Lexington Golf Club.
The Hornets took 162 shots in windy conditions.
Scorers were Jackson Sparger (39), Warren Fesperman (39), Beau Brinsfield (41) and John McCoy (43).
McCoy shot a 71 on Tuesday to tie for sixth place at the 18-hole North Carolina High School Invitational at Trayburn Country Club in Durham.

The Salisbury men's tennis team had an easy win Wednesday against North Rowan in the Central Carolina Conference.
Five games were byes.
In the four contested singles matches, AJ Jarrell, Bryant Davis, Ben Lawson and Owen Hamill won for Salisbury (14-1).
Hamill, a freshman, won 8-0, earning his first career victory.
The Hornets are No. 2 in the 2A West RPI rankings.

CONCORD — Carson defeated Robinson 8-1 in a South Piedmont Conference game Wednesday.
The Cougars (7-8, 7-8) had singles wins from Carson Throop, Austin Atwell, Will Welch, Griffen Bowman and Andrew Carter.
In doubles, Sloop/Atwell, Welch/Bowman, and Carter/Elijah Copic won.
Carson is ranked 24th in the 3A West RPI rankings.

HUNTERSVILLE — East Rowan lost 6-3 to league-leading Lake Norman Charter on Wednesday in South Piedmont Conference play.
East (9-7, 9-7) had singles wins from No. 4 Will Kessler and No. 6 Josh Gardner.
Gardmer/Preston Stevens won the No. 3 doubles match.

OAKBORO — East Rowan defeated West Stanly 2-1 on Wednesday in an exciting non-conference game.
Lily Kratz scored two runs for the Mustangs (15-2) in a game that lasted nine innings.
Kady Collins homered Kratz for a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Colts (13-7) tied it in the sixth inning.
East got the deciding hit in the top of the 9th inning when Kamryn Perkins knocked out Kratz. Chloe Shank's double advanced Klutz to third base.
Maddie Tygart pitched eight innings for the win. Perkins pitched 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning and made the save.
East moved up to No. 3 in the 3A West RPI rankings.

CHINA GROVE — West Rowan scored nine points in the second inning to dominate Carson 11-0 in South Piedmont Conference softball action Wednesday.
Arabelle Schulenberger won easily, allowing one hit in five innings. She had seven strikeouts and one walk.
Mackenzie Powers had the only hit for the Cougars (3-15, 2-11).
West (13-6, 9-3) got three RBIs from Riley Haggas and two RBIs from Kayla Burns and Reese Poole.
The Falcons had 12 hits, with Poole, Taylor Keller and EA Nance each having two hits.
West is No. 9 in the 3A West RPI rankings.

DENTON — Salisbury scored six runs in the fifth inning to defeat South Davidson 10-3 in a Central Carolina Conference game on Wednesday.
Ashley Yang had a triple and four RBIs. For the Hornets (8-7, 7-3).
Addie Myers had three hits, and Tyjah Sims, Jayla Robertson and Allie Peeler each had two hits.
Taliyah McCombs had two RBIs.
Katie Peeler led the Wildcats (4-for-8, 3-for-6) by allowing four hits and striking out 15.
Salisbury has moved up to No. 36 in the 2A West RPI rankings.

CONCORD — Carson scored seven points in the fourth inning to beat West Cabarrus 10-1 in a nonconference game Wednesday.
Carson had 13 hits and played error-free defense.
Javen Parks led the Cougars with 3-for-3 hits, a home run, a double and five RBIs. Parks is batting .383 with a team-leading 20 RBIs.
Corbin Hales, Kayden Lewis and Will Bradshaw each had two hits.
Bryson Shoemaker, Lewis and Bradshaw played doubles.
Gage Trexler pitched five hitless innings to lead to the victory. He struck out six and walked one.
Nolan Tubronik and Josh Bost each pitched one inning.
Carson (12-8) is ranked 22nd in the 3A West RPI rankings.

SALISBURY — There wasn't much to like about Salisbury's 11-0 nonconference loss to Reidsville on Wednesday.
Aiden Mowry had the only hit for the Hornets (9-10).
Salisbury is ranked 37th in the 2A West RPI rankings. Reidsville (8-10) is ranked 24th.

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan defeated North Stanley 10-0 in a nonconference game Wednesday to reach the 20-win plateau.
East had only five hits, but walked six.
East (20-1) took control with three runs in the first inning, then scored their sixth run under the 10-point rule to put the Comets away.
McCall Henderson led the Mustangs with three runs scored and a team-leading 31 RBI. Cobb Hightower had three points and two rebounds.
Logan Dyer and Braden Schieve each scored two runs.
Joe Burleson won with seven strikeouts in five innings. Mason Phelps pitched the sixth.
North Stanley (19-3) is ranked third in the 2A West Division. East is No. 1 in 3A RPI.
