In a move largely due to declining participation, the Weber School District eliminated middle school soccer.
The Weber School Board voted Wednesday night to approve the move, in line with the district's Middle School Soccer Committee recommendations, and notified employees and parents of the decision via email Thursday.
In a message Thursday, the district cited low participation and related player safety issues, difficulty hiring coaches, cost and lukewarm feedback on a community survey as factors in the decision.
Ninth graders will be encouraged to participate in high school football programs, and the district will “work with” local governments on soccer programs for seventh and eighth graders interested in playing.
Not coincidentally, the district is opening a new middle school, Mountain View Middle School, in West Haven this fall, and has previously fielded two combined teams at four schools (Orion and North Ogden, TH Bell and South Ogden). This would put an end to the much-needed lack of participants. past 6 seasons.
The email, sent by the “WSU Superintendent and Secondary Education,” also includes nine other extracurricular activities approved by the district: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls track and field, baseball, softball, girls volleyball, cheerleading, National Academic League) is promoted as the most junior high school. “We continue to offer a robust list of sports and extracurricular activities at the middle school,” the message reads. “These activities are good for kids!”
The district says it plans to select alternative activities for the start of the 2025-26 school year.
“This alternative sport will likely align with UHSAA-sanctioned sports currently offered at the high school level,” the email states.
The Rocky Mountain Football League title, which begins this school year, will be the last for the Weber School District.
