Both Washington Demon soccer teams defeated Keokuk yesterday. Despite winning 10-1 at home, the Washington Boys actually fell behind at first, allowing a goal by Keokuk in the 14th minute.
But the Demons had an immediate answer, tying the game in the 18th minute when sophomore Edwin Cortez scored on a great through ball from senior Isaac Gentry, before a handball hit the Chiefs' goal box and Gentry stepped up. and buried the shot. Penalty kick just seconds later.
Washington will get out of there. Manny Raimundo and Bill Delarosa had goals before halftime to extend the lead to 4-1, and fellow senior Brian Arreola had goals in the first two minutes and last 10 minutes of the second half.
Raimundo and Cortez each scored their second goals of the game, senior Angel Mata also scored between the posts and senior Randy Huertero buried another penalty to round out the Demons' scoring.
Washington won five straight games and improved to 7-1 in the Southeast Conference and 9-2 overall. The Demons will try to stay atop the conference standings in their next game tomorrow at Fort Madison.
The Washington women's team made the 70-minute trip to Fort Madison worthwhile with a 3-0 win over Keokuk last night. The Demons entered the halftime break with junior Maya Murphy coming on with an assist from senior Audrey Anderson and sophomore Angie Anderson doubling the advantage.
In the second half, Audrey Anderson put the finishing touches on a feed from sophomore Jocelyn Carter. The win improves Washington's overall record to 4-7, including 3-5 in conference play. The Demon Girls also play their next game against Fort Madison tomorrow afternoon at Washington Wellness Park.
