NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Coach Steve Spurrier, who led the Florida Gators from the sideline from 1990 to 2002, won the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy as a player during his senior season in 1966 and won the Heisman. – Also won a trophy. The Walter Camp Distinguished American Award is presented to an individual (not necessarily a football official) who has used his or her talents to achieve success in business or public service. “I am honored to be selected for this award by the Walter Camp Foundation,” said Coach Spurrier. “I have always tried to instill in my players that attitude and effort go a long way in achieving their goals, both on and off the soccer field. I believe in treating others the right way and doing the right thing, no matter how you do it.”
Coach Spurrier currently serves as an ambassador for the Gators and college football. He is the only person to become the winningest coach in program history at his two schools in the Power Five (UF and University of South Carolina), and is also the only one of his four to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. The Walter Camp Football Foundation is a volunteer organization founded in 1967. The foundation works year-round to select the university's oldest All-American football team and also makes donations to worthy charities and youth organizations.
NFL Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews (USC'83) received the foundation's Man of the Year honor, and former Texas A&M and current Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Jake Matthews (Texas A&M'14) ) are recipients of the Alumni Award.
