MARSHALL – Madison County youth have more recreational opportunities than ever before, and this spring is no exception, with the establishment of a co-ed youth volleyball league for its inaugural season.
Last month, the county's first youth recreational volleyball league concluded its eight-week season.
During the Madison County Volleyball League's first season, more than 50 local boys and girls, ages 6 to 13, participated in the activities. The season was played from March 5th to April 30th at Madison High School.
The organization is led by Lesa Edwards and Heather Mitchell.
Edwards has more than 30 years of volleyball experience, including more than 20 years of coaching, and is the former executive director of Biltmore Volleyball Academy in Asheville. Edwards currently serves as the varsity volleyball assistant coach at Madison High School.
Edwards said 53 local youth participated in the Madison County Volleyball League.
“The ultimate goal of this league is to build a foundation and instill a love and appreciation for the game. These basic fundamentals then carry over to middle school and high school volleyball,” Edwards said. Told.
Mitchell is currently the junior varsity volleyball coach at Madison High School and has many years of competitive experience. Mitchell is also his second grade teacher at Mars Hill Elementary School.
Edwards said she was encouraged by the turnout for the first-ever league, which exceeded expectations.
“When Heather and I first started planning and getting the word out, we were hoping at least 20 kids would sign up, so when we had 53 kids sign up; It was amazing and a little overwhelming. We scrambled to figure out how to register. We ended up adding 3 hours to make sure all the kids could participate. It's great to see volleyball being so popular in Madison County.”
This first league could help lay the foundation for a long-term success of the volleyball program at the junior varsity and varsity levels in the future.
But for now, Edwards and Mitchell are happy to be starting the youth league from scratch.
“We are thrilled to be able to provide this great opportunity to so many young people across the county,” Mitchell said. “I've always wanted to build his volleyball program and share my love for volleyball with other kids. I'm grateful to be able to play even a small part in Madison's volleyball future.”
The Madison County Volleyball League is an educational beginner league where kids can learn the fundamentals of volleyball in a fun environment with experienced coaches. This league is open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 13.
