TAMPA, Fla. — The University of South Florida football team returned to the field Tuesday for the team's first spring practice.
“I love practice. I love spring ball. I woke up this morning without an alarm,” head coach Alex Goresh said. “I just wanted to get in here.”
Goresh led the Bulls to the largest single-season upset in program history in his first season in 2023 (7-6) (1-11 in 2022).
“I think the bar has been raised here,” he added.
Now, those expectations are even higher.
“I want to take this team to the 12-team playoffs and win a championship,” quarterback Byron Brown said. “That’s the goal of everyone here.”
Redshirt sophomore Brown returns as the Bulls' starting QB. He was the catalyst for the team's turnaround, setting a single-season program record for passing yards.
“Everyone wanted to get back out there,” Brown said. “I take a little break to work on training, but when I get back to the practice field it's different. Everything is moving fast.”
For defensive lineman Rashad Chaney, the difference is clear.
“We watched film of the first day of spring ball last year and we were like, ‘Wow,’” Cheney said. “There's still some things to clean up here, but you'll see we're a completely different football team. We're bigger, faster, stronger. We have a different standard. I am.”
USF will have 14 more practices before the April 13 spring game.
