EUGENE, Ore. – A University of Oregon football player has been charged with felony hit-and-run after a fatal crash in the Whitetaker area Monday night, according to the Eugene Police Department.
EPD officials said they are investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in the area of West 4th Avenue and Polk Street on April 15 just after 9 p.m. Police announced at 11:45 p.m. on the same day that they arrested Daylen Amir Austin, 19, who is charged with first-degree hit-and-run with a motor vehicle, at an apartment complex. According to call records, the first call came in about a stabbing at about 9:15 p.m. The 46-year-old victim was found on the road with large lacerations to his neck and a hammer nearby. Police would not comment on the 9-1-1 call, saying it was a complex investigation and the investigation was ongoing.
Austin, a sophomore defensive back at the University of Oregon, was scheduled to be arraigned at 11:30 a.m. April 17 at the Lane County Jail. EPD officials said they are still gathering information to submit to the Lane County District Attorney's Office for a final charging decision. Austin remains in custody as of April 17, 2024, according to jail records.
