Schenectady, New York – A five-goal outburst in the second period made the difference as the Union College men's hockey team defeated Harvard University 6-2 on Friday night at Messa Rink.
Union (14-14-3, 8-8-3) is in fifth place in the conference standings with 29 points, just one behind fourth-place Clarkson. Harvard University (5-17-4, 5-10-4) fell to ninth place with 23 points.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the historic championship, members of the 2014 championship team attended the game.
In poetic terms, the win over the Crimson marks the first time they have beaten Harvard since the 2013-14 season.

Union took the lead in the first period. 2nd grade nick young He took a shot on target, but Smedzard deflected it and started the scoring.
The Garnet Chargers took the lead in the second with five goals in the center field. MacArthur and Nixon scored just 22 seconds apart, giving Union a 3-0 lead. Hart made a long pass from the north edge of the ice to Watkins at the edge of the neutral zone. The senior took a shot from the top of the right circle, beating Derek Malahy and prompting a goalie change for the Crimson.junior Karen Ferguson A nice backdoor pass to Nixon, who sent a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle for Union's fifth goal. Watkins added his second goal of the period by tapping in a pass from Smedzeld up front.
The Crimson didn't go away quietly as they scored two goals in the opening minutes of the final frame. Zachary Culpa scored at 2:26, and Michael Callow found the back of the net just two minutes later.
2nd grade Kyle Chauvet He made 13 saves in the win. Malahy made 12 saves in the loss. Aku Koshkenvuo made seven saves in 30:07 in relief.
Union will be back in action tomorrow for their final home game of the regular season. Puck drop against Dartmouth is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Messa Rink. We ask that fans remain present after the game to honor the six members of our senior class.
