Earlier this offseason, Anya Poole announced her decision to enter the transfer portal.
While this decision shouldn't come as much of a shock (given the state of affairs surrounding college basketball), it still feels strange to see a four-year college player end his career elsewhere.
Poole, along with Alexandra Zelaya, Alyssa Usby and Dejah Kelly, have the ability to play a fifth season due to the coronavirus. Unfortunately, most programs like the UNC women's basketball program don't have the roster space to accommodate everyone.
No matter how much they wish, it's just not possible.
Nearing the end of his career, Poole has officially found a new home, announcing his transfer to the Clemson Tigers.
Poole was a starter in two of his first three seasons in Chapel Hill, appearing in 116 games (74 starts) as a Tar Heel. She was moved to a bench role last season as Maria Gakden, a transfer from Boston University, took over the midfield role for this year's team.
Poole averaged 5.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game during his career. Her playing time has decreased this year (down 8.8 minutes from her junior season), so it's no surprise to see her looking for more playing time opportunities in her final season of college eligibility. It's not something you should do.
Poole is an active contributor to the UNC women's basketball program and should make an immediate impact for the Tigers this fall.
Of course, it's possible that Poole will get a chance to play against his former teammates during the 2024-2025 season.
