When Itro Coleman left the University of North Carolina women's basketball program to take the position with the Virginia Tech Hokies, Courtney Banghart had to fill a big hole on the coaching staff.
On Tuesday, Banghart made another very strong addition to the show's staff, announcing the hiring of Corey McNeil.
McNeill comes to Chapel Hill with plenty of coaching experience, having spent the last five seasons at East Carolina University.
His coaching career began at Coppin State University, where the team made two NCAA Tournament appearances during that time. After completing his stint at Coppin State, McNeill joined the coaching staff at Georgetown University, where his reputation as a defensive-minded coach helped develop the Hoyas into one of the premier defensive teams in the country.
From there, McNeill made the first team in the ACC, spent the next two seasons at Virginia, then three seasons in Hartford before becoming a key member of East Carolina University's coaching staff.
McNeill brings a wealth of experience to the table and his presence should be an invaluable addition to the coaching staff of the University of North Carolina women's basketball program. Given his resume, McNeill has a chance to make a big impact on a Tar Heels team that looks to continue playing into March this season.
In an official press release, McNeill had this to say about the new opportunity:
“I am honored to join the UNC women's basketball team and am incredibly excited to step into Chapel Hill and begin my journey as a member of the Tar Heels. I look forward to immediately utilizing my recruiting and player development experience, as well as my basketball acumen, to assist Coach Banghart.”
I would like to thank Coach Banghart for the opportunity to work with her and her staff to continue the tradition of this legendary program in the ACC and across the nation.โ
