When Dejah Kelly announced she would not be returning to the UNC women's basketball program for a fifth season, all eyes were on how Courtney Bangert and company would fill the void.
On Sunday, the Tar Heels acquired a talented guard from the transfer portal as Arizona State transfer Trayanna Crisp committed to North Carolina.
Crisp, a native of Goodyear, Arizona, spent his first two collegiate seasons with the Sun Devils. After being used primarily as a reserve his freshman season, the 5-foot-8 guard moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore, averaging just over 34 minutes per game.
As she got more playing time, she improved in basically every aspect of her game and became more productive. She finished her sophomore season averaging 12.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 40.6 percent from the floor. Her shooting percentage (both from the floor and from three-point range) increased by nearly 10% on her as she proved she could shoot at an effective rate.
Courtney Bangert and the Tar Heels added two guards through the transfer portal, so this is a very nice addition. After a season in which guard depth was severely limited, Crisp, along with his fellow transfer Grace Townsend, are hoping to revamp this unit for the new season.
North Carolina's roster will look a little different, but it still has a lot of talent. It is hoped that the new additions (including the freshman class) will help the program continue its recent success as it aims to make a deep run in next season's NCAA Tournament.
