Former Belmont star Cade Tyson is officially a Tar Heel. The UNC basketball program's official social media accounts revealed Thursday afternoon that the 6-foot-7, 205-pound forward embodies his commitment.
After spending about five weeks in the transfer portal, Tyson announced his commitment to UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis and his staff in late April. The 20-year-old North Carolina native, who has earned the Tar Heels' only portal award so far this year, is scheduled to arrive in Chapel Hill next week to begin training and prepare for summer training.
Tyson is the younger brother of recent Clemson sensation and former All-ACC First Team selection Hunter Tyson, who has two years of college basketball experience and two years of eligibility remaining.
As a freshman at Belmont, he averaged 13.6 points and 4.6 rebounds while shooting 41.7 percent from the field, earning him Missouri Valley Conference Rookie of the Year honors. And Tyson took his production and efficiency to another level as a sophomore last season, averaging 16.2 points and 5.9 boards while draining 46.5 percent on 3-point attempts and 85.5 percent from the charity stripe. .
Meanwhile, there are still three open scholarships left on the 2024-25 UNC basketball roster, which is pretty solid in terms of guards and wings, allowing Davis & Co. to move on from outside bruiser Harrison Ingram and center. They appear to need significant frontcourt help to replace Armando Bacot.
However, the Tar Heels continue to pursue talented big men in the transfer portal without success.
