SAN ANTONIO — It's going to be a hot Memorial Day, and many people celebrating the holiday will be heading to the water to cool off.
However, if you are not careful when you go to the pool or river to swim, the consequences can be tragic. We tell you this not to scare you, but to remind you that drowning is preventable.
But as the weather gets warmer, so does the number of swimming accidents.
If you're heading to a body of water to cool off, whether it's the beach, a pool, a lake or a river, there are multiple ways to stay safe.
Many people head to the Comal River in New Braunfels for the popular tubing adventure.
The city has added additional lifeguards to prepare for the expected large numbers of swimmers, Parks and Recreation Director Chad Donegan said.
In addition to tubes, they also provide personal flotation devices for those who want them.
“If you're not a strong swimmer, we encourage you to take advantage of our life jacket program,” Donegan said. “We provide life jackets at no cost.”
It's also a good idea to designate a “watchdog” for your children when they're around water — in my family, that was my mom; in yours, it might be my dad or a trusted friend.
Also, be aware of water safety features around bodies of water.
This could be things like pool fencing, first aid kits, and alarms – all of which can help prevent drowning.
And finally, taking swimming lessons is the easiest way to learn how to be around water.
If you want to swim, San Antonio has several places to do so, including some pools with free admission.
