According to local repair shops, the most important thing to do is change the air filter at least four times a year and hose down the unit once a year.
ROCK ISLAND, IL — With summer temperatures just around the corner, it's time to tune up your air conditioner and make sure everything is ready to go.
“Lack of maintenance is the most common problem we encounter,” says Casey Mehrens, service technician at Crawford Company. Mr. Mehrens has been with Crawford Company since 2017.
On Friday, May 17, Mehrens performed routine maintenance at his Rock Island home. The first step was to replace the client's air filter.
“When airflow is poor, clogged electrical outlets can cause your air conditioner to freeze and prevent proper circulation throughout your home,” says Mehrens.
When your air filter becomes clogged or dirty, your HVAC system has to work harder to push air through the system. The result is increased energy usage and higher utility bills, so no one wants to spend more money than necessary.
Mehrens' next step was to clean up the debris and hose down the AC unit.
“By cleaning it, we don't get as hot,” Mehren said. “The hotter you get, the longer you run. And the longer you run, the more you pay.”
“This (air conditioning unit) is outside to pump out heat. If the outlet is too clogged and dirty, it won't be able to pump out enough heat and all that heat will go back into the house,” says Mehren. he says.
Changing your air filter at least four times a year and hosing down your AC unit once a year are Mehren's two biggest tips for keeping your home cool and your wallet healthy.
If you are working on the AC unit yourself, be sure to turn it off before opening the electrical compartment. This prevents electrocution and prevents the unit from potentially turning on with your hand inside.
