Shortly after being hired as Virginia Tech's women's basketball coach to replace Kenny Brooks, Megan Duffy immediately began recruiting players. One of the players she visited with was Katie Sears, a talented point guard from North Carolina who had numerous Division I offers.
On Monday night, Sears announced his participation at X and committed to joining Duffy and the Hokies.
Sears, a native of Boone, North Carolina and a graduate of Watauga High School, chose Virginia Tech over other schools including Boston University, Wake Forest University, Purdue University, Clemson University, Marquette University, University of Michigan, James Madison University and the University of Kansas.
Sears is the No. 2 player in North Carolina's Class of 2025, according to Prep Girls Hoops, and the 5-foot-9 junior averaged 30 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists per game on her way to winning her third conference Player of the Year award.
Sears, who played for Team Curry in AAU, is Duffy's first commit in the Class of 2025 and is beginning to make her presence known with the program. In Sears' announcement posted to The X, she ended it by walking into Duffy's office to tell her the good news in person.
As it stands, and as you know, things are constantly changing in the transfer portal, Virginia Tech's 2025-26 roster includes Sears, Carly Wenzel (junior), Samiha Saffren (junior), Mackenzie Nelson (sophomore), Lelia Wells (sophomore), Lani White (senior), Caris Baker (junior), Kayle Petersen (sophomore), Mya Hazelton (sophomore) and La'Miyah White (sophomore). A lot can change in the transfer portal before the 2025-26 season begins. But Duffy is off to a good start in building his future in Blacksburg. Check out some of her highlights here.
