Former Southampton striker Joe Tesem says Saturday's dramatic and thrilling 4-3 win against Birmingham City could be a “turning point” in the fight for automatic promotion to the Premier League. he said.
Southampton were forced to come back twice before Joe Aribo's winning goal six minutes into stoppage time made them 10 men down.
“We're back to normal,” Tesem said on the “Goin' Home with Adam and Joe” podcast. “We're chasing and we're in a great position to chase. This is going to be a race.
“I have to admit, I started writing about Saints too because we lost three games to Bristol City, Millwall and Hull and it felt like we were going backwards after those three games, and then against Liverpool But I lost.
“This was a turning point for me. You need turning points like that to move forward. Even if we were down 1-0, 2-1 down, 3-3 down, we got back on track and in the 96th minute we were down. We won” 4-3.
“We struggled to score, but we had a lot of good chances. We played forward football, put the ball in spaces, we had runners, people were aggressive, we ran in before the pass went through, we increased the pace. We moved it forward.”
“We didn’t stop, we didn’t play sideways or behind us, we attacked and were very positive.
“That's the way we have to play football, the way the 4-3-3 formation is set up to attack. We had our wingers doing it.”
