The Connellsville Recreation Commission and Connellsville Area School District will once again team up to provide volleyball and tennis programs for area children this summer.
The summer volleyball program will run from June 17th to July 17th every Monday and Wednesday from 9-10:30 a.m. for girls in grades 3-8.
The summer tennis program will begin on July 9th and run through Aug. 8th every Tuesday and Thursday from 9-10:30 a.m. for boys and girls in grades 3-8, and 10:30 a.m.-12 noon for boys and girls in grades 9-12.
The cost per child for each program is $25.
Connellsville High School athletic director Rich Evans said the recreation committee ran the program for several years, but interest waned over the years and the program seems to have fallen into disuse.
“Over the last few years, they've been looking to bring back some of their summer programming but were struggling with funding and space, so they contacted us and we've partnered with them for the last few years,” he said.
Evans added that the recreation department has decided to stick with volleyball and tennis for now, but it is up to them whether they want to add other programs in the future.
“I think these are good programs right now,” Evans said. “I know there are some summer basketball programs already in place through other organizations and, of course, there's already Little League baseball.
“We offered swimming for two summers, but interest waned,” he added. “I guess they felt it wasn't worth the effort to continue the program.”
Both the volleyball and tennis programs are coached by high school team coaches and high school team players.
To register for either program, call the high school athletics office at 724-628-1350, extension 2560, or email ddewitt@casdfalcons.org . Please include your child's name, parent/guardian's name, upcoming school year, email address, and phone number.
Connellsville Recreation Commission Chairman James Flynn said the commission will also partner with Jason Bandemer to offer a youth park physical education program this summer in East Park, with a donation from the recreation commission keeping the cost per child to $30 per week.
The program will run for four weeks this summer, June 17-20, June 24-27, July 8-11, and July 15-18, from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday.
For more information or to register for the “PE in the Park” program, call Bandemer at 724-433-9608.
Flynn added that the recreation committee is trying to bring recreation to the area that people of all ages can enjoy. The committee wants to see the park used as much as possible, but bringing some form of recreation to the area is the ultimate goal.
Events are also being planned for people over 55. Flynn said he is planning trips to the casino and to a Pirates game.
“Our goal is any group or organization that can work with us to bring some kind of programming to the area,” he said.
