Indianapolis – West Coast Conference commissioner Stuart Jackson has been appointed to the NCAA Division I men's basketball committee, replacing former Santa Clara athletics director Renee Baumgartner, who announced he would be leaving the school for personal reasons on June 30. Jackson will serve the final four years of Baumgartner's original five-year term on the committee.
Jackson has been in his current role for one year, having previously served as executive associate commissioner of men's basketball for the Big East Conference for nearly nine years, where he managed all aspects of basketball operations including schedule optimization, compliance, student-athlete programs, data analytics and the conference's postseason tournaments.
Mr. Jackson also spent 13 years with the National Basketball Association, first as Senior Vice President and later as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. In that role, he oversaw game operations, scheduling, playing rules, officiating and overall administration. Mr. Jackson also introduced the NBA's referee play-calling analysis program with advanced technology supporting officiating across the league and managed the NBA's international basketball operations, overseeing the NBA's rapid growth around the world.
Jackson's extensive basketball resume includes serving as president and general manager of the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1994-2000, assistant coach and later head coach of the New York Knicks from 1987-1991 and director of basketball operations during his first NBA tenure from 1991-1992. He also served as chairman of the NBA Competition Committee, served on the boards of USA Basketball, the Basketball Hall of Fame and the FIBA Technical Committee and was a studio and game analyst for NBA TV and FS1 for five seasons.
During his collegiate career, Jackson served as head coach at the University of Wisconsin from 1992-1994, leading the school to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 47 years. He also coached at Providence College, Washington State University and the University of Oregon and served on the NCAA Rules and Competition Committee.
A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Jackson began his collegiate career at the University of Oregon before attending Seattle University, graduating in 1978. He was inducted into the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Fame in 2017 and will be inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
“I am honored to be invited to serve on the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee as the West Coast Conference representative,” Jackson said. “I appreciate Renee Baumgartner's contributions and am honored to be appointed to serve a full term with this prestigious group. I look forward to the opportunity to work with the current committee members and NCAA staff under Dan Gavitt's incredible leadership at basketball's premier event and contribute to the men's basketball championship and other future endeavors.”
