The St. Clair County Health Department issued swimming advisories for Holland Beach in Port Huron and Keewadin Beach in Fort Gratiot Township.
Officials said in a news release Thursday morning that the beach was closed due to elevated levels of E. coli, and in accordance with Michigan state recommendations, water samples will be taken at the beach until E. coli test results are within acceptable water quality limits.
“E. coli is a microorganism commonly found in the digestive systems of warm-blooded animals, including humans, and can indicate the presence of fecal contamination,” the agency said. “Beachgoers should be aware that E. coli levels may be elevated after storms or high winds because the bacteria can be found in stormwater runoff, including drainage from streams and ditches, and stirred up by waves.”
Advisories for St. Clair County public beaches are shared at facebook.com/stclaircountybeaches and on the Michigan Beach Guard's website at www.egle.state.mi.us/beach.
