Portland State football awards junior defensive end AJ Schlatter Memorial Scholarship Slade Shufelt For the 2024 season.
Shufelt, a product of Hillsboro High School, was a starter in 2023 and earned a track and field scholarship. Shufelt will receive the AJ Schlatter Memorial Scholarship for his accomplishments in the mold of his former Vikings. His on-field success, academic success and his local ties combined to earn Shufeldt this prestigious honor.
“Slade embodies everything that AJ is all about. There is no better person to receive this scholarship than him,” Coach Viking said. bruce burnham.
Shufelt had 16 tackles, five tackles for loss, and a team-high 3.5 sacks in 2023. He was also an Academic All-Big Sky Conference honoree two years in a row and earned an Academic All-District award in public health research. Selection subject.
Schlatter, a native of Canby, Oregon, joined the Vikings football team in 2014 and 2015. He was a promising linebacker on his 2015 playoff team for the Vikings. Schlatter started as a redshirt freshman and recorded 62 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week after PSU's Dam Cup victory over Eastern Washington. Tragically, Schlatter passed away in early 2016 due to complications from a minor surgery.
Spring practice updates
Portland State University concluded the second day of its 15-day spring practice session on Wednesday. The Vikings will wear shoulder pads for the first time Thursday morning for added strength. PSU's spring game will be held on April 27th at Hillsboro Stadium.
Barney Ball: Knee surgery is not just for athletes.Just ask the Vikings football head coach bruce burnham. In late February, Burnham underwent right knee replacement surgery. Through two days of spring practice, Burnham has been able to move quickly without the use of a cane, and during the football team's practices, he's fine, just moving. Although he hasn't reached top speed yet, Burnham has made a significant recovery from the knee problems that have plagued him for years. 40 yard dash time is still a long way off…
Spring newcomers: Portland State welcomed 10 newcomers to the field at the beginning of spring. Three are 2024 contractees and seven are walk-ons. Signatories include: JR LB jordan allen (San Jose State); JR WR Branden Alvarez (San Jose State); and JRTE Seth Lyon (Saddleback JC). Walk-ons include: J.R. LB. Chase Beardsley (Palomar College); JR QB William Haskell (Washington); JRTE jaleel heath (Washington); JRCB Jeffrey Robinson (Arizona); JR DL jaden sandusky (College of the Redwoods); JR QB Rieger Thayer (Butte College) and FR WR eddie schultz (Cal Poly)…The remaining 24 NLI signees are expected to join the program in August.
