GEORGETOWN – Special Olympics Delaware will host four unified soccer tournaments and Sports EXPOS this spring, including an April 30 event at Sussex Technical High School.
The event at Sussex Institute of Technology will involve 260 students from 15 primary schools across Sussex and Kent counties.It will be held from 10:15 a.m. to 1 p.m.
An event is also scheduled for May 2nd at Polytech High School in Kent County, and twice at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex in New Castle County on April 23rd and April 25th.
Approximately 1,500 Special Olympics Delaware athletes and unified partners representing 63 schools will compete in soccer events across the state over the next several weeks.
In competition, athletes will participate individually or with unified partners at various sports skill stations as part of the Unified Sports EXPO, or as unified teams in 5-on-5 round-robin tournaments.
“Our athletes enjoy working on improving their skills in a variety of sports, which gives them the skills they need to use in their daily lives,” Special Olympics Delaware spokesperson John Buzbee said in a press release. Fine motor skills and gross motor skills all improve as well.” “Add to this the interaction with our unified partners leading up to this event, and the interaction with high school volunteers on the day of the event, so it's a win-win for everyone involved.”
