Soccer team visits elementary school to spread literacy message

Pine Bush High School's star athletes returned to their elementary school to help celebrate National Reading Month with young students and share the message that reading is important throughout life.

The high school students divided into teams and headed to four elementary schools. Many of the players returned to their childhood schools.

They read aloud to various classes, sometimes in teams of two and sometimes alone. After reading, the younger students asked questions to the older students. They asked about high school, football, reading, teachers, and more.

So many high school students roamed the hallways looking for former teachers to say hello. At Pacana Think, art teacher Jessica Torres was as excited to meet her former students as they were to meet her. She showed me the board outside the classroom. Their photos were posted there. The children were overjoyed to see their elementary school-sized versions.

At Circleville Elementary School, several students came into the fifth-grade wing to surprise Susan Corcoran and Sean Healy. They left a message for Robin Conklin to wish her all the best.

What better way to encourage young students to read than by having people they respect read to them? Varsity football coach Rich Ornsby and assistant coach Kyle Schneider did a great job organizing this and accompanying the boys to school.

National Read Across America Day is March 2nd, the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as children's author and cartoonist Dr. Seuss. He wrote and illustrated over 60 of his books, many of which are some of the most popular children's books of all time.
