Southern Methodist University in Dallas announced it has suspended members of the school's football team who, along with NFL player Lachie Rice, are accused of injuring four people in a car crash last month.
In an email from SMU, the athletics department said Dallas police had issued an arrest warrant for Theodore “Teddy” Knox, a sophomore cornerback from Baton Rouge, La., who is listed on the school's football roster. He said he received a notification.
Police allege that on March 30, Rice, in a Lamborghini SUV, and Knox, in a Corvette, were driving at high speeds on Route 75 near University Boulevard when they struck four other vehicles. It caused a chain reaction accident that was captured on a witness' dashcam video.
Rice, 23, and Knox, 21, are both charged with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision with serious injury, and six counts of collision with injury.
In addition to the accident, dashcam video showed the occupants of the sports car getting out of the car and walking away.
“All occupants of the Lamborghini and Corvette fled the scene without stopping or providing information to determine if anyone required medical assistance,” Dallas police said in a statement after the crash. “Two of the drivers involved were treated at the scene by Dallas Fire Rescue for minor injuries, and two occupants of the other vehicle were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.”
The school announced Thursday afternoon that Knox has been suspended from the team and that it takes the allegations seriously. SMU said federal student privacy laws prevent it from sharing further details about the disciplinary proceedings.
Attorney Deandra Grant, who represents Knox, told NBC 5 on Wednesday that Knox had “fully cooperated with law enforcement” but had no further comment.
Mr. Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas), said last week that his client admitted to police that he was driving the Lamborghini at the time of the crash. In a statement released on social media, Rice said he takes full responsibility for his role in this matter.
As of Thursday afternoon, Dallas police confirmed to NBC 5 that neither Rice nor Knox had surrendered.
Rice, who grew up in North Richland Hills, played college football at SMU before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023.
