Six members of the Boston University men's ice hockey team have been invited to represent their country at the 2024 World Junior Summer Showcase, to be held July 26-Aug. 3 at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
Promoted to second grade Tom Wilander Although he was a second-year student, he played for Sweden. Gavin McCarthy He will join freshmen Kamil Bednarik, Cole Yzerman, Cole Hutson and Brandon Svoboda on the U.S. national team roster. The annual event is designed to evaluate players for possible selection into their national teams to compete in the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, to be held from Dec. 26, 2024 to Jan. 5, 2025 in Ottawa, Ontario.
McCarthy and Wilander both had impressive rookie seasons with the Terriers. McCarthy was plus-12 with one goal and four assists for five points. Wilander, who won a silver medal with Sweden at the 2024 World Junior Championship, finished his debut season as a plus-28 with four goals and 21 assists for 25 points and was named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and a New England Division I All-Star.
Svoboda has won two USHL Clark Cup championships, including this season with the Fargo Force. A third-round draft pick by the San Jose Sharks in 2023, Svoboda totaled 29 goals, 18 assists and 47 points in 102 USHL regular season games.
Bednarik, Yzerman and Hutson were teammates on the U.S. U-18 National Team last season, and the trio won a silver medal at the 2024 World U-18 Championship. Bednarik appeared in 61 games for the U.S. and recorded 65 points (26 goals, 39 assists) last season. Yzerman set the NTDP career goals record (127) last year with 58 goals, 31 assists and 89 points in 57 games. Hutson set the NTDP points record for a defenseman with 119 points (25 goals, 94 assists), including 51 points (15 goals, 36 assists) in 51 games in the 2023-24 season. All three are expected to be selected in next week's NHL Draft.
