MEMPHIS – As the United Football League battles attendance issues in its first year, the Memphis Showboats gave back to the Memphis community Friday by hosting a free soccer clinic for hundreds of area youth.
The children enthusiastically talk about soccer with the Showboat team, who are eager to connect with the city.
One of the downsides to the UFL is the decision to have all eight teams based in Texas and only fly to their home markets to play games.
This camp was one of the few times Showboat was able to connect with fans, and fans were treated to a genuine treat.
Here's your chance to see John DeFilippo's Super Bowl ring, which he won as coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
“It's a little weird. I'm not going to lie because I've been in Arlington all week. There's a sense of anticipation arriving here because, for me personally, it feels like I'm coming home. I was here last year. We lived in Memphis when we came to , so we always look forward to coming here because we feel comfortable when we're here,” Show Boat receiver Vinny Papal said. “My fans, it would be great to be able to talk to them and build a relationship with the city and the fan base. It's a great city with a lot of history and I hold Memphis close to my heart. I'm proud of that, that's for sure.
Good news for the Showboat field heading into the game against undefeated Birmingham. Case Kucas, who missed last week's game with an elbow injury, will start against the Stallions, DeFilippo said.
