Mar. 3—GENEVA, Ohio — Day two of the District 10 Swimming Championships was held Saturday at the SPIRE Institute. Meadville finished the meet with four girls qualifying for the state championship tournament.
The Meadville girls started the day with the 500-yard freestyle, which featured seniors Jaydyn Jordan and Jenna Bosco. Jordan was second with a time of 5:29.90, and Bosco was third with a time of 5:59.68.
Senior Julian Gowetzki took first place in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday, breaking the district record with a time of 56.38. The record was previously held by Jordan Nasbach of McDowell in 2020. Gowecki won the 100 backstroke on Saturday in 57.77 seconds. Skylar Brand also swam this event and placed second with a time of 1:04.26.
“all [Julianne] Concentrated and accurate. “She's doing whatever job she's supposed to do. She looks effortless when she goes out there, but she's paying for it,” Meadville head coach Pete Coppelli said.
Senior Brielle Cheney swam the girls' next event, the 100-yard breaststroke. Cheney placed third with a time of 1:11.75.
It was in the 400-yard freestyle relay that the girls really stood out. The girls took first place with a time of 3 minutes 42.7 seconds. The relay consisted of Jordan, Chaney, Gowecki and Brindyn McCullough.
Meadville boys also swam in Saturday's meet. Aiden Mahoney started seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.38.
Freshman Asher Johnson competed in the 100-yard freestyle and placed seventh in 53.42 seconds.
“I think for Asher, he just needed to get some meets under his belt. He's a first-year swimmer,” Coppelli said. “I think he was probably a little nervous because this was his first high school season. So now he understands what it is. Next year is unfinished business for him.”
Zachary Carr swam the men's 100-yard breaststroke, taking third place with a time of 1:03.96.
The Meadville girls team finished second in the team standings with 315 points behind McDowell's 446 points. Dubois (236 points) and Elie (51 points) rounded out the team standings. Gowecki was named the Class 3A girls swimmer of the meet.
The boys placed 4th with 141 points. McDowell won with 594 points. Taylor Alderdice (225 points) and Obama Academy (150 points) rounded out the top three.
There was an error in Friday's results from D-10. Aiden Rudolph competed in the 200-meter medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay in place of teammate Noah Bliss.
All event winners from the D-10 meet will advance to the state championship tournament, which will be held March 13-16 at Bucknell University. Class 3A events are scheduled for his March 13th and 14th.
“We're going to do the best we can,” Coppelli said. “State is always kind of the wild card. They've been doing really well. We're just going to keep moving forward.”
