Southeastern Idaho Football Club is scheduled to host its home opener on Saturday.
The soccer team, known as the Corbits, whose name comes from a family of birds including crows and magpies, currently has one win and one loss after two away games.
John Eckert, the team's executive director, said this is the team's second season in the United Premier Soccer League, the lowest tier of professional soccer in the United States.
“Last season was pretty hectic,” Eckert said. “We had about two weeks to prepare before Opening Day. So (the team) looked really sharp this year because we had a chance to really build up to this moment.”
“We've gotten off to a good start this season with the first two games. We're really excited about this big game at ISU and we're expecting a lot of people to come. Our record attendance. There are about 300 people. I'd like to join in. Defeat it. ”
Eckert said every regular season game is important and there are some big stakes, not just this season.
“In the postseason, the top seeds advance directly to the finals, and second and third place have a one-game playoff against the higher seeds to advance to the finals. The winners of the finals advance to the regional tournament; the winners advance to the regional tournament.”National Tournament “,” Eckert said.
“At this level, the winner of the national tournament will qualify for the Lamar Hunt Open Cup and, depending on the outcome of the draw, will have the opportunity to play against MLS teams. Therefore, this level has no competition. If he performs well enough, he will be transferred to an MLS team. ”
The game kicks off at 3pm on Saturday at the ISU practice field next to the ICCU Dome, and admission is free. Eckert said anyone interested in trying out for the team or volunteering is welcome and can contact him at: Southeastern Idaho Football Club Facebook.
